| i d o n o t e n v y At first the title of this album was supposed to be "My Mum·s Songs· because most of the songs in it were written by her. The music of only three of them - "Macedonian Flamenco", "Man's Sorrow" and "Blond Girl" is composed by me. All the other texts and music are the work of Elka Nedkova - an exceptional person and artist. I am very lucky that she is my mother. If it were not for her love and caring for me I would not have become the person I am. When I was 14 years old I started getting interested in the typical teenage stuff like cigarettes and other foolish things. My mother put a guitar in my hands and told me that it was much better for a girl to be able to sing and accompany her singing rather than hold a cigarette. And so the first songs I accompanied were her songs. As soon as I learned a few chords I started to think up my tunes and she wrote the texts for them. Years after that with the help of my mother's poetry and reading the marvellous poetry of the Bulgarian symbolists I started writing my own lyrics. A few years ago we were in a beautiful place in the wild. I had my guitar and I was singing when I decided to play to my friends one of my mother's songs. That's how it all started. Every day and night I was remembering more and more of her songs. I even called her once in a while to refresh my memory of some forgotten lyrics. Sometimes my friends were driving me crazy making me sing one song over and over again. And so they decided to collect some money and record the album. That is how the album was born and that is why on the cover it says - producer: Nona and friends. The horse on the cover of the album is not there by chance either. In the place that I told you we were, we passed our days riding horses and singing in the evenings. One of my mother's songs - "Haramia Horse" was written long before I got a passion for horses. In the song "For me from mummy" it says:
This was written long before I learned to ride. Horses occupy a very important place in my mother's poetic symbols of freedom, nobility and pride. For me one of the best feelings is to ride and have the wind play in my hair. The album "I Do Not Envy" is still very successful, one of the best selling in our tiny country Bulgaria. One of my girlfriends came up with the promotional sentence of the album - "Do not envy Nona, let her songs reach your hearts". |
